Two Ohio Districts Honored as 21st Century Learning Initiatives

Ohio’s Cleveland Heights-University Heights and Orange school districts were among 15 public school districts and two independent high schools selected by the Hanover Research Council as national models.

The Hanover Research Council, a D.C.-based independent research, recently released a report profiling successful 21st-century learning initiatives in 15 public school districts and two independent high schools across the nation that are making significant progress "reinventing themselves as 21st Century Learning institutions."

Recognized among the top winners by the report are two Ohio districts—the Cleveland Heights-University Heights (CH-UH) and Orange school districts—recognized for their high graduation rates, assessment scores, and attendance rates and their use of 21st century tools and skills to boost performance.

"We were delighted to be included in this grouping, even though we fully realize that we have a long way to go in the journey," wrote Dr. Joseph Micheller, CH-UH interim assistant superintendent, in an email to K-12 Computing Blueprint. A videotape he sent our way shows 21st century technology in action in the district.

All school districts described in the Hanover Research Council report share several common characteristics:

  • Sophisticated technology programs;
  • Clear strategic goals for 21st Century skills implementation;
  • Innovative curriculum initiatives;
  • A commitment to preparing students for the 21st Century workplace and environment.
